In 1779 the Comte du Buffon tried to obtain a value for the age of Earth using an experiment: He created a small globe that resembled Earth in composition and then measured its rate of cooling.

This led him to estimate that Earth was about 75,000 years old.

All ordinary matter is made up of combinations of chemical elements, each with its own atomic number, indicating the number of protons in the atomic nucleus.

Additionally, elements may exist in different isotopes, with each isotope of an element differing in the number of neutrons in the nucleus.

Over time, radioactive isotopes change into stable isotopes by a process known as radioactive decay.

Some radioactive parent isotopes decay almost instantaneously into their stable daughter isotopes; others take billions of years.

Radiometric dating is also used to date archaeological materials, including ancient artifacts.
